Hard at Work

Or at least they are trying to seem as though they are hard at work…

Rogue and aiden are lying under a table at Costco. Aiden is wearing his red and black mesh Autism dog Services vest with a black martingale and red leash. rogue is lying behind him in her navy blue harness, light blue collar and black leather braided leash.

I can’t even count the number of times I’ve had people come up to me and ask if the dogs are no longer on duty at times like this.

even though we are obviously still in a public place, where pets are not welcome, people seem to think that because the dogs are lying quietly while we eat or whatever, that they are no longer working and can be loved.

I am always willing to talk to people about the dogs and often allow people to talk to them while they’re chilling, but I also try to inform the public about the fact that even though it may not look as though they are actively working, the dogs are still on alert and ready to move when asked, so as long as their working gear is on, they are on duty.

On an aside, rogue found it really hard to stay hidden with aiden under the table as well. he’s a big boy, so takes up almost all of the room, but she made a good effort at staying out of the way. Maybe it was having aiden there, but Rogue also did really well at staying down when I asked her to.

Could They Be Friends?

Aiden, Skye and Bailey have now been with us for almost a week and everyone is getting along quite well.

Our bed is a queen-size, but it isn’t quite big enough to fit 6 full grown retrievers, so let’s start with just the 5 labs.

Skye, Rogue, bailey, Cessna and Aiden are lying together on a black metal framed bed with a grey blanket. Skye is behind Rogue, they are closest to the headboard with Bailey next to Rogue, Cessna beside Bailey and aiden in front of everyone.

Rogue thought it would be cool to pose with her sister, skye. Don’t they look so much alike?

Cessna wasn’t so sure she could handle having her picture taken more than once, so here’s a shot of just the fox red labs and Bailey.

Aiden and Bailey got tired of posing, so here’s Canyon with Rogue and Skye.

Guess Who’s Visiting!!

Aiden sitting beside Brooke at Home Depot. Aiden is a 6 year old fox red lab. He is wearing his red working vest with a black martingale collar and red leash beside Brooke's blue denim clad legs.

Aiden, our first foster puppy from Autism Dog Services, is here for 11 days!!

Aiden and Canyon are attempting to smother Brooke. I'm sitting on a dark brown leather couch and the boys are both smothering me with kisses.

Aiden arrived Sunday afternoon with his doggie cousins skye and Bailey. Skye is Rogue’s half sister, they have the same sire, she’s just a year older. Skye was once an ADS foster puppy, but wasn’t quite cut out for the job. Bailey wasn’t ever a foster puppy, she’s always been just a loveable pet.

Bailey and Aiden lie at opposite ends of a tan and brown couch. Bailey is a pure white female lab with a black nose and black eye liner wearing a light pink and brown collar.

Happy Birthday Aiden!

Guess what?

It’s Aiden’s birthday!

Today Aiden is 5 years old!

It’s hard to believe five years have already passed.

A 10 week old Aiden sleeps. The picture is taken from close up so Aiden's face fills the shot and you can see all of his puppy wrinkles.

Monkey Man, it’s been a while since we last saw you, but I hope you have an awesome day and continue to make us proud with the work you do for Kam.

Aiden watches Kam come down a blue plastic slide.

Reece

Reece’s family sent us some new pictures of our chocolate boy!

Front view of Reece. He has his typical dopey look on his face.

Reece wears his mom's light blue baseball cap

Kim says that Reece is still a cuddle bear and continues to be a positive influence on their former foster puppy, Urban, who they also adopted.

he has had no real issues with his elbow either, which is awesome!

we will be getting together with him and his family on the 29th, so stay tuned for new pictures.

Happy Birthday Reece!

Today our second foster puppy from Autism Dog Services, turns four.

Reece is NOW four!

Time sure flies…doesn’t it?

If time allows we’re hoping to get together with Reece and his family next week. If that happens, there will be new pictures!

In the meantime, HAPPY 4th BIRTHDAY REECES PIECES!!!

Four years Ago

Four years ago today, Huib and I welcomed a ten week old male caramel coloured, wrinkle puppy into our home.

We named him Aiden, and raised him for Autism Dog Services.

Aiden grew up to become an autism assistance dog.

And still continues to influence our lives.

Even though things did not end up going the way we would have wanted, in terms of being told we were no longer needed as a foster family after raising Reece, I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything.

We met so many new friends:
Kelly
and her former ADS foster puppy Ace;

Taz and Caleb;

Karen P., her pet dog Summer and her many ADS foster puppies and Lab Rescue
Fosters;

K-9 Crazy and her National Service Dogs
foster puppies;

Monique, Christina and their family; and

Many others who follow me through Facebook and/or read this blog.

And we learned so much about ourselves:

I can teach my dogs to do anything;

Huib is more of a dog person than he thinks;

It’s okay to be disliked by others;

We have the skills to raise and train Cessna’s successor;

Etc.

I never would have guessed, that a goofy fox red Labrador retriever could affect our lives so drastically.

Aiden’s Four!

Today our first foster puppy for Autism dog Services, Aiden, turns four.

This is so hard to believe!

It feels like just yesterday we handed off his leash to the Carroll family forever.

Aiden was such an amazing puppy to raise and train. He had so much life and enthusiasm. I think this is why Huib and I love rogue so much, she reminds us of our big caramel goofball.

We get almost daily updates on how our boy is doing, but I really have nothing new to report. He continues to attend school with Kamaran, still loves apples and to play fetch until he can’t walk.

We’re hoping to get together with Aiden and his family in the new year, but until then, here are some of my favourite Monkey Man pictures.

Happy 4th Birthday Aiden, Amber, Teal, rody, Libby, Taz and Marley!

Reece Is Three!

Today our second foster puppy for Autism Dog Services, Reece, turns 3.

We haven’t had a chance to connect with his adoptive family in over a year, but have gotten a few updates from friends who see them once in a while. I’m hoping we can get together with Reece and his family in the next couple of months and post some up-to-date pictures on the blog.

Last year I wrote an entry which explained a bit about raising Reece and why we decided to forgo adopting him. Reece was a wonderful boy, but he just didn’t fit into the pack and Huib couldn’t overlook all of the issues we’d had with our big chocolate boy.

I miss Reece tons, but know he’s been adopted by a wonderful family and that he is just a phone call away if I want to check in.

Happy 3rd Birthday Reeces Pieces!

City Adventure

On the Saturday (12th) of our trip “down south”, we took Cessna, Rogue and my friend Kelly’s Autism Dog Services foster, Willow, into Toronto on the GO Train. Rogue and Willow were awesome on the train ride, easily settling after just a few minutes.

After a couple of hours of walking around the city, riding the subway, street cars and meeting up with Taz and Caleb for lunch, Huib and I took the girls to the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, to meet up with some LFC foster puppies.

Cessna really impressed me at the Royal. She only had to wear her newtrix for the first 20 minutes and she guided like a pro. She barked at a goat and some sheep, but in her defense, they also made noise at her lol!

Rogue on the other hand, was a monster! She pulled like crazy and sniffed everything! Poor Huib was happy when we were ready to return to the city for dinner with his sister.
