I’m a Big Girl Now

Guess what everyone?

Arizona, face and chest

I’m a big girl now!!

I am now a year old.

My coat is still not as long as Canyon’s, but I am now just as tall as him. I am longer than Rogue and Cessna too, but I am only 52lbs.

Arizona laying on a dark brown love seat

I have learned a lot over the past 10 months of being with my family. I still like to see what is on the counter and try to help with the taste testing at dinner, but I know how to sit, lie down, target hands, come when called and play the “leave it” game (Mommy says it isn’t a game, but I sure think it is).

I am still doing field work lessons every couple of weeks, but for now Daddy has decided to stop showing me. He says the judges don’t like my looks for some reason…

For my birthday I was spoiled. I got a pool, as well as several new Nylabones and a couple of puzzle toys. I love to chew and I am very busy, so Mommy and Daddy thought I would like some new toys to chew and figure out.

I don’t know where my siblings are, but I hope they had a good birthday too!!

rogue & Cessna take On Marineland

Guess what everyone!!

Mommy took me and Cessna to Marineland!!

It was SO much fun!!

We had to get up a bit earlier than normal, but it was okay with Cessna and I because our friends Sam, Mikayla and Kira came, so we knew it was going to be something exciting we were doing.

When we arrived at the park, Mommy made me and Cessna wear our respective head halters because she said she didn’t want her arm pulled off. I personally think I didn’t need it, but Cessna was CRAZY!!

Once we were all suited up and the humans had their backpacks on, we walked to the front gates and met up with 9 puppies in training from Cessna’s school with their human companions.

I didn’t catch many of their names, but I did get to talk to a flat coat named Martha and 2 labs named Okra and Posy – Mommy says she is glad she isn’t going back to Cessna’s school right now because the names they are coming up with for the dogs are WAY too weird!!

Once we all got through the gates, we walked to a big stadium like place where there were tons of benches and a big pool where I saw dolphins swimming around. I had never seen a dolphin before, but Mommy says they are one of her favourite animals (with dogs and horses being the other two).

Mommy held on to Sam’s arm while we walked to our seats because there were tons of people and she wanted to make sure I didn’t take her on a detour.

At our seats Cessna and I had a perfect view of the pool. Cessna was making some crazy screeching and high pitch whining noises, while I watched intently and quivered with excitement.

When the show started, Cessna got even louder and Kira had trouble calming her down. Mommy tried to help Kira, but Cessna wanted so badly to go swim with the sea lions, dolphins, beluga whales and walruses.

We watched the sea lions catch big rings, collect stuff from the bottom of the pool and swim around. The dolphins jumped, swam and also did some ring catching, while the belugas carried their trainers and did some neat performing. the walruses, in my opinion, were boring, they really didn’t do anything.

after the show we got to meet a dolphin trainer and Mommy and the other humans got to go touch a dolphin. Mommy wasn’t too sure she wanted to do it, but Mikayla asked her to go with her and together they got to feel the dolphin’s tail. the dolphin’s name was Tsunami and Mommy said she felt like a thick, rubbery sort of foam material.

when everyone had gotten their pictures taken, the group began to disperse. We went to the car to get some food for the humans and Mommy asked Kira to come help her let me and Cessna go to the washroom.

After the humans stuffed their faces, we head back into the park and walked to Friendship cove. Cessna absolutely loves the orcas, so Mommy wanted to take us there first.

the first mammals we came to were the beluga whales. there were about 6 or more in the tank and we got to watch them from above and below. After that we went over to the orca and watched Niska swim from below before going up and watching her swim and splash everyone from above. Niska is the only orca at Marineland right now. Mommy isn’t sure if orcas like to live alone or if Marineland has just not had a chance to get another one since the passing of the previous one. She thinks she remembers there being more than one orca when she visited a few years ago, but she isn’t totally sure.

After the orcas, we went to the deer park and waited outside while Kira went in with our friend Elizabeth to feed and pet the deer.

Then we walked over to the ride area and Kira went on a couple with her sister while we watched. Cessna jumped around and whined as if she wanted to rescue Kira, but Mommy held on tight and asked Cessna to sit calmly. I found the rides interesting to watch, but I knew I wasn’t going anywhere near it, so Kira was on her own there 😉

On our way to the bigger roller coaster we stopped and saw the black bears. It was sad to see the older ones in the small pool, but it was cool to watch one of them tell off a youngster. Mommy said it sort of sounded like how Cessna tells off Arizona when she tries to steal something she has. the younger bear wanted to sit on a rock that the older one was on so started making noises at him. the older bear refused to move and made even louder noises back.

When we got to the bigger roller coaster, Kira was too scared to go on it, so Mommy offered to go with Mikayla. Mommy gave my leash to Sam and Kira held on to Cessna. I was SO worried about Mommy leaving us, so I whined a lot and tried to follow her. Sam wouldn’t let me, so after a bit I gave up and waited. Mommy got back 20 minutes later – I was SO excited to see her!!

Mikayla needed to get to work for 6pm, so we left Marineland at 4:30pm.

Oh yeah! Before we left, as we were getting ready to get into the car, Sam dropped a can of Coke and it exploded all over her, also spraying me, Cessna, Mommy and Kira. So when we got home, Mommy put my gear into the washer, wiped Cessna’s down with cleaner and then made us both have baths. Neither of us like baths, but we also didn’t like feeling all sticky, so tolerated it.

I had a lot of fun at Marineland and I hope to go again some day. I think Cessna had the best time though and I am glad she got to go before she retires fully.

5 Already…

Guess what everyone!!!

I am 5 years old today!!

Mommy says she can’t believe I am already 5, but I say 5 is just a number and nothing to be concerned about 🙂

Boy, I have had a good day so far…I got a hand full of Froot Loops and some veal neck bones for breakfast, then Mommy shared some of her Skittles with me – I LOVE Froot Loops and Skittles!!

Later my friend Kira and her Mom are coming to visit…I wonder if they have presents for me…

Mommy says her and Kira are going to bake me a cake to share with Rogue and Cessna, I wonder if that means i will need to share it with Kira’s dog, Molly….she’s okay, so maybe I don’t mind sharing.

if I’m good and Daddy gets home early enough, Mommy says we’re going to Rens to get some new toys, come on Daddy, get home in time!!

It’s been great so far being 5…

Rogue and Cessna Take on New York: Part III

Welcome back everyone!

Rogue modelling her new harness. The back plate is camo green and has a pocket with Service Dog embroidered on it in white thread. The straps and stabilizer loops are black with small white reflective paw prints. the girth strap is just black. she's also showing her new black with white Haida pattern collar.

Now I’m going to tell you all about our final day in New York City.

Rogue's face and a bit of the chest part of her harness.

Since we had a chance to get to bed at a reasonable hour the day before, we woke up pretty early on Tuesday. Breakfast was pretty uneventful until I had to rescue Cyndy from the Honey Bug. I’m not sure why she wasn’t scared or why Mommy and daddy were laughing, but there was this Honey bug sitting beside Cyndy’s iPhone that I thankfully noticed and had to get. It was SO scary though! I tried really, really hard to be brave and get the Honey Bug for Cyndy, but it was just too much for me to handle.

***** A quick note from the humans about the “Honey bug”. Cyndy had wanted some tea, so she got a small packet of honey to put into it. she placed the packet beside her phone on the nigh stand and when Rogue got onto the bed to greet her, she noticed the packet of honey and started acting as though it would eat us all. She barked at it and backed away and moved a bit closer and then barked and backed away again. We couldn’t stop laughing and as hard as we tried, the “Honey bug” was to scary for the Rogue Hurricane. *****

Once the humans were dressed, we headed to the subway. It was pretty rainy and icky out, so we didn’t really want to walk too much. We took the subway to Battery Park to catch the ferry to Liberty Island.

view of the New York City skyline from the ferry

Cessna, Uschi and I had a lot of fun watching the propellers splash through the water at the back of the ferry. We also liked watching the mainland move away and all of the seagulls flying around.

Cessna on the ferry looking through the railing of the ferry toward New York City

Once we got to Liberty Island, we got into the line ups for entrance into the Statue of Liberty. Since Mommy and Cyndy aren’t able to see very well, the security people let us bypass the lines and go right to the security checks. Mommy and Daddy didn’t have too much trouble going through, they just had to remove almost everything they were wearing and Mommy was even close to losing her pants because she had to remove her belt before she went through the metal detectors – wouldn’t that have been hilarious?

Rogue and Cessna looking into the water from the deck of the ferry

Rogue sitting in front of the old Statue of Liberty flame. The flame is a metal frame with yellow glass.

Cyndy had a bit more trouble though. the security lady was not very nice to her and at one point put her hand onto her shoulder, ripped Uschi’s leash from her hand and pushed her back through the metal detectors and asked her to come back through. Cyndy was pretty shaken up by the lady’s actions and was quite vocal about it. the lady didn’t apologize and even threatened to have her sent out of the statue completely if she had a problem with the search techniques. Cyndy said she’ll be calling the people in charge to have the woman talked to about the appropriate way to treat visitors, especially ones with disabilities.

From the security checks we walked up some stairs and then took a couple of elevators up to the pedestal of the statue. Cessna and I were pretty excited to see what was below us, so we had Daddy pick us up. the barriers holding people back from the edge was too high for us to just put our paws up, so Daddy held us both and let us look around.

After we were done on the pedestal we went back down to the museum part of the statue. Mommy got to feel some of the parts of the statue and Daddy read some of the explanations to her and Cyndy.

Rogue, Cessna and Uschi in front of a replica of Lady Liberty's face in the museum section of the Statue of Liberty.

Cessna, Uschi and I thought the Statue of Liberty was kind of boring, but we really liked walking around the island. We saw tons of birds and there was SO much water! I really wanted to go check out the water and so did Cessna, but Mommy and daddy were big bums and wouldn’t let us go in. We did get to look in though which I guess was good enough.

After we caught the ferry back to the mainland, we decided to head toward time Square. The humans were hungry and we were planning to go on some sort of cruise, so they thought eating in Time Square would be a good idea. The weather was still pretty icky and it took us a while to figure out where the humans wanted to eat, so by the time we were standing at the bus stop that would take us to the next ferry, we were all pretty tired again. Cessna was not in an excited mood and kept picking her paws up as though they were hurting, so that worried Mommy a bit.

Brooke and Rogue with Cyndy and Uschi waiting for the ferry back to the mainland.

The decision to forgo the cruise was made after Cyndy fell over though. It was kind of funny. Cyndy was standing to the right of Daddy and the humans were chatting. Then all of a sudden, Cyndy fell over to the right. No one knows why she fell, maybe us chi pushed her or maybe she lost her balance, it just happened so quickly.

At the hotel we all had a nap and then at 7pm we headed back to the subway to go to Brooklyn for dinner. Cyndy’s friend was meeting us there, so even though none of us were really in the mood to move again, we had to go. Cessna, uschi and I slept under the table while the humans ate cheesecake, drank milkshakes and chatted. Mommy said the cheesecake was awesome and was really glad Cyndy wanted to share with her and Daddy – the portions were big I guess…

After a few hours, the humans were finally stuffed. We headed back to our hotel and went to bed.

Early Wednesday morning we got up, ate breakfast and then began packing. We had to catch the train back to Albany at just after 10am.

The train ride was quiet. I think we were all exhausted from our trip.

Mommy, daddy, Cessna and I headed back to Canada Thursday morning. We arrived at the border around 4pm, so called our friend Della to see if we could pick canyon up. I was SO happy to see my golden brother! It had been an entire week since I’d seen him last. He was happy to see us, but also seemed happy enough to stay longer.

I hope you enjoyed reading about our trip to New York. If you want to see more pictures from our trip you can go to Cyndy’s blog to see a complete gallery.

Rogue and Cessna Take on New York: Part II

On Monday (the 25th), we woke up pretty late. We had had such a busy first day that we all didn’t want to get out of bed, the humans included.

Once we had all eaten breakfast, Mommy and Cyndy packed their bags for the day and we set off for the subway. Cessna was kind of achy and the humans had sore feet, so we decided that it would be best to take the subway as much as possible.

our first stop was to see the Egyptian exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum. The exhibit was cool because Mommy and Cyndy got to feel all of the different statues and carvings on the sarcophaguses.

Brooke touching a statue. I'm wearing blue denim jeans, a burgundy hooded sweatshirt that says GAP in gray and an off-white Roots baseball cap.

while Cyndy and Mommy were checking out one of the sarcophaguses a museum worker came over, pulled Cyndy’s hand off, pointed and told her not to touch. Mommy was standing beside Cyndy feeling the different carvings and Uschi was standing right beside Cyndy, so it was as though the guy thought she wasn’t blind enough. The humans had wanted to see some of the other exhibits, but after that, they decided that we would move on to the Guggenheim.

Since Cessna was kind of tired, Mommy decided to give her to Daddy and asked me to help her out. I did pretty well. I overstepped a couple of curbs, but Mommy backed up quickly and we did them again. After a bit, I caught on and kept Mommy safe while Cessna took a break. At the Guggenheim I continued to help Mommy and we walked all over the building together. Mommy thinks I’m finally ready to do more of Cessna’s job which makes me really happy!

After we had finished taking pictures and looking around, we walked across Central Park and headed back to the subway that would take us to our hotel. We were all tired from walking around, so the humans ordered pizza and canollis, and we watched television for the rest of the night.

Oh, Cessna went on strike by the end of our second day, so Mommy had to ask Daddy for help. Mommy says Cessna is getting ready to retire and that she won’t be asking her to do anymore marathon trips. She’s only going to ask her to work when she feels like it.

Cessna

Come back tomorrow for the final entry on our trip.

Before I really sign off though, I’d like to wish Mommy and Daddy a VERY Happy 13th Anniversary! Thirteen years ago Daddy asked Mommy to go out with him 🙂

Rogue and Cessna Take on New York: Part I

From November 22nd until the 28th Mommy, Daddy, Cessna and I were in New York.

On the 22nd, Daddy and I picked Cessna and Mommy up from school, and we began our trip to the Canada/US border. The wait at the border wasn’t too long or eventful. After passing through, we headed to the Niagara Fashion Outlet to do some shopping.

Daddy spoiled Mommy for her upcoming birthday!

First she got a new pair of black Oakley sunglasses. She really wanted a white pair with pink lenses, but Daddy put his foot down and said “No Way!”, Cessna and I think he made a good decision on not letting her get them.

then Daddy took her into the Tommy store and bought her a white with navy blue 3-in-1 winter coat. I’m not sure why he let her get white since she ended up dirtying it with muddy paw prints three days after she got it (WHOOPSIE!), but he did, and it looks nice on her.

Finally, he took her into GAP and got her a burgundy sweatshirt and a bottle of their Dream body spray (because she loves it!).

After he was done spoiling Mommy, Daddy had to think about himself and bought some new white running shoes from Nike for work.

after the shopping spree, we headed to a hotel in rochester. the hotel was nice. It was simple, but the room we were assigned happened to be an accessible one so it was kind of neat. Cessna and I quickly claimed our spots on the small love seat and bed, and we settled in for the night.

early the following day Mommy called Cyndy and Uschi through FaceTime and told them we were on our way.

We didn’t stop too much on the drive to Cyndy’s place. Cessna and I slept, but We passed by a Salt Museum that Mommy said sounded kind of interesting (*yawn*), but we didn’t stop. Other than that we didn’t see much of anything else, just the Boxing Hall of Fame and some rest stops. We stopped at the halfway point so Daddy could get a coffee and Mommy could get a peppermint mocha latte at Starbucks, and then just before cyndy’s place we stopped at a McDonalds for some lunch.

I’m going to let Mommy take over for a bit now…

It was so cool to finally meet cyndy and Uschi in person. cyndy is really cool and Uschi is absolutely adorable!

After about an hour, I’m not so sure Cessna and rogue thought Uschi was adorable, but I thought she did a pretty good job at trying to get them playing with her. Unfortunately for Uschi, Cessna is 10 and not really interested in playing rough games, and rogue is a bit anti-social with dogs that aren’t ours or dogs owned by really close friends.

we didn’t really do too much that night. We walked around her local mall and let Rogue work a bit, had some pizza for dinner, checked out the various packages we had sent to her place and chatted A LOT!!

Early Sunday morning, we all packed our stuff into our car and headed to the train station in Albany, where we took the train to New York City.

the train ride was pretty uneventful, except for at the beginning when Cyndy was told to quiet down by the conductor, lol!

When we arrived at Penn Station, we piled off the train and began walking toward our hotel, which was about a 14 minute walk away. On the walk, Cessna was kind of weird and I couldn’t figure it out, but I guess she really needed to poop, because at som point during the walk she started to squat in harness. there wasn’t any grass we could find, so I guess she decided she couldn’t hold it any further. She’s only ever pooped in harness one other time during her long working career so I wasn’t too upset.

the Hampton Inn was nice. We had a pretty basic room with two queen-sized beds, a television, a washroom and a small wardrobe where we could put our coats. the nicest part of the hotel was that they offered coffee and snacks all day long and in the morning they offered a really nice continental breakfast.

Once we had put away our bags and I emptied out my backpack that we would be carrying around the city, we began walking toward Broadway because we were going to see Wicked at 7:00pm.

Cessna, Uschi and Rogue Sitting In Front of The Wicked Display

the sidewalks were SO busy! Cessna did an awesome job at keeping me safe and away from other people. Rogue walked with Huib because I didn’t feel comfortable asking her to work in such a busy environment, at least not the first day.

On our way to Broadway we saw people dressed up as: elmo, Hello Kitty, Minions and some other characters that I cannot think of. Cessna, Uschi and rogue didn’t seem to notice the characters at all, which I thought was pretty cool.

When we got close to Broadway, we were all hungry so decided to go to Olive Garden for some lunch/dinner. I had a really yummy angel hair pasta dish with a garlic cream sauce that contained mushrooms, onions and some chicken. cyndy had another chicken dish and Huib had something else that I can’t remember. After dinner we walked over to the hershey Store and of course, spent some money, lol! I got some big peanut butter cups for my sister and Step-Dad, as well as some mini Rolos, Mini Eggs and big Cookies and Cream chocolate bars. I also wanted to get a big hershey mug, but we weren’t going back to the hotel anytime soon, so I decided to forgo it.

we had an hour or so to kill before we had to go over to the Gershwin Theatre, so we each got a hot drink at a little cafe across the road from the theatre. Huib went to get the drinks and Cyndy and I sat with the girls. When Huib got to our table he forgot which drink was which, so we had a hilarious time trying to decide who had whose drink. In the end, we had each gotten the correct mug, but it wasn’t decided until we had all finished them. I had ordered a chocolate mocha latte and Cyndy had ordered a hot chocolate, so both drinks smelled extremely similar and both tasted the same, so it was impossible to decide which was which from just looking at them.

When we got to the theatre, we thought we had half an hour before the musical began, so we all headed to the washroom. In the ladies room, I had both Cyndy and the washroom attendant in stitches. I don’t really know what I did, but for some reason, I had the water spraying out in a full force spray all over the counter instead of at a normal spray into the sink. Huib thinks there was some sort of air thing that I was probably touching.

Metal Dragon Face Above The Stage

Once we were finished, Cyndy and I walked toward the theatre to meet up with Huib and Rogue. It ended up that we were a couple of minutes late for the musical’s start, so we had to stand at the back of the theatre and wait until there was a set chafe. It was no big deal. Cyndy and I stood together and she described what was happening on stage since she had already seen the musical before. she wasn’t talking too loudly, but an usher came up and smacked her in the shoulder and told her to be quiet. I didn’t notice that this had happened, but she explained later on. She said she would have said something to the usher, but she was kind of in shock, so let it go.

Big Map of OZ On The Stage

Wicked was, well, wicked! If you ever get a chance to see it, GO!

Afterwards, we were going to take the subway to our hotel, but Huib couldn’t figure out which one we needed to take, so we ended up walking back. On the way we were stopped by a guy dressed up as Spiderman and then saw a naked guy wearing a cowboy hat and playing a guitar (supposedly this guy is the Naked Cowboy and is pretty famous, Dad seemed to know about him).

When we were close to the Hampton Inn, we all decided that we weren’t quite tired enough, so went up to the top of the empire State Building. I really wish I could have seen the view.

Night view of New York City from the observation deck of the Empire State Building

when we got back to the hotel, we were all SO tired!

We had probably walked 80 blocks, so even the dogs were exhausted.

I think I’ll stop here and let Rogue continue describing our adventure tomorrow.

It’s Hurricane rogue’s Birthday!!!

guess what???

today is my birthday!!!

Today I am TWO!!!

I can’t believe it…I’ve been alive for twenty-four whole months now!!!

can you??

Let me tell you all about what I can now do…

I can guide Mommy through hallways;

I can guide Mommy around obstacles to my left;

I can stop at curbs;

I can find doors;

I can walk nicely at Mommy’s side (when there isn’t too much going on around us);

I can leave treats alone that Mommy drops on the floor;

I can stay in a sit or down for 10 whole seconds, while Mommy stands 4 feet away;

I can give her my attention (our version of eye contact) by touching my nose to the side of her left leg;

And, I can close cupboard doors and drawers.

I’ve learned so much in the two years I’ve been alive, so I think it’s time for a party, don’t you???

Merry Christmas!!

Hi All, it’s Cessna here. I wanted to take over the laptop to send you all a seasons greetings and also to tell everyone how spoiled we were by Santa Paws.

First things first…

MERRY CHRISTMAS to all of our friends and blog followers! We hope Santa Paws was as good to you as he was to us, and also that you were blessed with a white Christmas (if you wanted one).

For Christmas this year, Santa Paws decided to bring us joint presents, instead of individual ones. I think this was a good idea because then Canyon doesn’t have to steal our gifts, he can just hoard them all BOL!

So the first really cool thing, in my opinion anyways, that Santa paws brought us is from Nothing Added. It’s a Christmas Box full of yummy dehydrated treats! Some of the things we got in it are: beef tripe, duck feet, beef liver, anchovies, Alaskan Pollock, chicken feet, beef trachea, and many other things that I cannot remember.

And guess what else?

Some new toys!!!

Santa Paws brought us a corduroy moose that makes a honking noise and has squeakers in each of his limbs, a squeaky donkey, a squeaky frog, a squeaky pig and a red JW Pets ball.

Oh, and before I go, Santa Paws also brought the cats each a large package of Temptations treats. Logan got beef flavour, Laya dairy and Branden (Aunty Brandi’s cat) received turkey flavour.

All of us at ruled by paws, hope you and your family have a safe and happy holiday season.

Kisses and Tail Wags,

Cessna
